Today in History - 【Sugi ike】Taiwan's Timber Distribution Center ~ During the Japanese colonial period, due to the development of the Alishan timber industry, the population of Chiayi City doubled and rapidly prospered, becoming Taiwan's timber distribution center. The current location of the Chiayi City Cultural Center was once the site of the 【Sugi ike】, the largest cedar pool in East Asia. After the completion of the Alishan Railway, a timber storage pool was built to soak and store timber, mostly cedar, hence the name Cedar Pool. The pool was surrounded by trees, with dense shade covering the sky, and a gentle breeze blowing, carrying the scent of cedar. It was a popular recreational spot, where one could fish under the trees and enjoy the tranquility. Today, the Chiayi City Cultural Bureau is actively enriching the area with various artistic and cultural activities, aiming to inherit the cultural heritage of Chiayi and create a new cultural landscape. The goal is to involve the entire community in cultural construction, allowing everyone to appreciate performance activities and improve the quality of life in the Chiayi region.
