Sunshine Bridge is New Taipei City’s first pedestrian-and-bicycle river-crossing landscape bridge that is people-oriented and combines both sculptural form and nighttime light sculpture. It was officially inaugurated and opened to traffic on November 19, 2011. Sunshine Bridge broke the record for Taiwan’s longest-span steel bridge, with no piers in the river, a clear span of 245 m and a total length of 315 m. A single-rib inclined steel-arch cable-stayed bridge, it is supported by harp-like steel cables and five arch rings, highlighting the bridge’s graceful curves. It was awarded the 13th National Construction Golden Quality Award.
Sunshine Bridge was rebuilt from the former Xindian Zhong’an temporary bridge; the city government transformed it into a long-span, flood-resistant landscape bridge, serving as a dedicated pedestrian-and-bicycle link between Laiyin Park on the right bank and Sunshine Sports Park on the left bank of the Xindian River. The curved deck directly connects from the Ankeng end to Tangquan pedestrian bridge, seamlessly integrating the greater Bitan area on both banks. At night, the richest light-sculpture show illuminates the Xindian River, making the bridge a new landmark for the district and enhancing the riverside scenery and citizens’ leisure quality.
The bridge’s light-sculpture design adorns the Xindian River’s beautiful nighttime riverfront. Sunshine Bridge uses fully energy-saving, carbon-reducing LED lighting and features a meticulously choreographed dynamic light-sculpture show, creating a nighttime attraction for the Xindian area.
