連江縣莒光鄉蛇島
At the Serpent Mountains, searching for the mythical bird The Serpent Mountains are not actually mountains but four reef islets located off the west side of West莒, stretching in a straight line as if a serpent coils through the sea. Another account claims they gained their name due to the eroded coastal terrain in front of the principal peak of the Serpent Mountains, which resembles the tongue of a snake flicking in and out with the tides. As the Serpent Mountains are located very close to the main island of West莒, and connected to the Kunqiu settlement via a pebble barrier, during high tide only the head of the serpent remains above water, while in the past island residents could cross the shallow waters to forage shellfish on low tides. However, as precious seabirds were discovered breeding there, these islets have now been designated as the Tern Protection Zone. The Serpent Mountains are the only island within the莒Guang Township of the Matsu Tern Reserve. Surveys confirmed the presence of species, including the Red-footed Tern, the Bridled Tern, the Common Tern, the Frigatebird, and notably the legendary Black-capped Tern. Thus, every summer, visitors can witness the sight of flocks of terns flying in unison and bathing on the beaches at the bird-watching pavilion—making a legend in birdwatchers' circles as an exceptional spot for bird viewing. Note: From April to October each year is the terns’ breeding season. Climbing the Serpent Mountains is prohibited during this period. Visitors arriving should avoid making noise to prevent disturbing the terns and pay attention to tidal movements for safety. The Kunqiu Beach The most beautiful beach in Matsu Kunqiu Beach is located at the westernmost part of West莒Island. The beautiful sunset there is a highlight of Matsu, and it is well worth visiting to witness the crimson evening sky over this earthly paradise. When the tides recede, a sandy path clearly extends from Kunqiu Beach to the Serpent Mountains. The intertidal zone there is rich with ecology and regarded by the people of West莒as a "natural refrigerator." In addition to its scenic beauty, there is also a Kunqiu Trail. This wooden boardwalk follows the hillside, winding through shrubs and small bushes along the西路Mountain. Viewers may admire various native plants of Matsu there. Throughout the trail, there are rest pavilions offering a panoramic sight, making it an ideal spot for a view. From there, one can enjoy a different perspective while gazing toward the Serpent Mountains.
