Snake Head Mountain is located on a small peninsula protruding from the northern tip of Fenggui in the southwest corner of Penghu, jointly guarding Ma‑gong Bay with the Golden Turtle Head on the northern shore. Its shape resembles a snake lying on the sea, hence the name “Snake Head Mountain.” Climbing to the summit provides a panoramic view of the bay, a distant vista of Ma‑gong City, and a look toward Sijiao Islet and Penghu Naiwan. In the past, Snake Head Mountain was a crucial military stronghold; in 1622, the Dutch built a fort there, the earliest “Red‑Hair Fort” in Taiwan. The site of this fort was designated a national historic monument in 1991. On the southeastern side of Snake Head Mountain stand the memorials to fallen French soldiers and to the Japanese ship *Matsushima*. The former commemorates French troops who died of disease during their occupation of Ma‑gong Island, while the latter was erected by the Japanese government to honor the officers and sailors who perished when the gunpowder magazine of the *Matsushima*, docked near Ma‑gong Harbor, exploded. Through planning and revitalization by the Penghu County Government, the area around Fenggui Snake Head Mountain has been designated as an ancient battlefield site, preserving the historical military legacy of the mountain. It is now one of the popular spots for tourists to view and relax.
