Jinsan Wanli Hot Spring Area

2025-09-02
Jinsan and Wanli are nestled in the mountains and by the sea, boasting abundant and fascinating natural resources. The area is not only rich in diverse products, but also features high-quality hot springs, courtesy of the geothermal energy from the Datun Mountain volcano. The Datun volcano group is rich in sulfur, and in the Qing dynasty, Yu Yonghe came to Taiwan to extract sulfur and wrote the "Bei Hai Ji You" (A Travelogue of Sulfur Extraction), which serves as a historical testament to the abundance of sulfur deposits in this area. Today, the famous Sihuangping and Gengziping are still significant sulfur-producing areas. The hot springs in the sulfur and geothermal region flow into Jinsan and Wanli; the hot springs in the Huangxi River, near the Dajiaoyoukeng, bring this precious natural treasure to Jinsan and Wanli. It is said that Jinsan and Wanli's rich hot spring resources were discovered and used hundreds of years ago. At that time, the Wanyi area was still inhabited by the Kadaogalan tribe, who discovered that the hot springs could treat wounds and skin diseases, and used them as medicinal water. It wasn't until the Japanese period, when the Japanese, who loved soaking in hot springs, introduced their bathing culture to Taiwan, that the hot springs in Jinsan were developed, and new and old guesthouses were built, making the hot springs a warm and enjoyable experience.
