The North Gate Salt Field, with its rebuilt and new tourist face, Tainan City has two salt fields: the North Gate and the Qigou. The two are quite different. The Qigou Salt Field has earth-plateau salt fields, with the newest salt fields; while the North Gate Salt Field has all tile-plateau salt fields, with the oldest existing salt field in Taiwan (the Jingzaijiao Salt Field, which opened in 1818). This salt field is located south of the Jiushui Stream and north of the Sanliao Bay Stream. Due to its long history, the salt workers here have rich experience. The quality and color of the salt produced here are the best in Taiwan. The development of the Qigou Salt Field, Anshun Salt Field, and Wushulin Salt Field all needed the support of salt workers from the North Gate Salt Field. This makes it, along with the Xincuo Salt Field, the original hometown of Taiwan's salt industry. In 2000, due to the construction of a new coastal expressway cutting through it, not only did this salt field close earlier than other salt fields, but the landscape of the salt field was also severely damaged. Today, after rebuilding and renovation into a tourist salt field, the old site still looks new with a brand new face.
