Da-Dao-Cheng Theater, located on the 8th and 9th floors of Yong-Le Market, is one of the branches of the Taipei City Social Education Center. Before 1908, it was originally a garden. During the Japanese rule period, it was renovated into a market, where thousands of textile stores once gathered, making it the largest textile center in Taiwan. Da-Dao-Cheng was also the cradle of traditional opera, known as the "opera cave." Da-Dao-Cheng Theater aims to perform, promote, and preserve traditional opera. The 9th-floor theater holds various traditional operas such as Gaozi Opera, Peking Opera, Nan Guan, Bei Guan, Hakka Opera, storytelling and more. The 8th-floor traditional art hall is planned to have regular performances of glove puppetry, Nan Guan, and storytelling. The first-floor plaza is arranged with "Playing in the Opera" cultural and art activities. The theater offers cultural and art study classes in spring and autumn, including courses on opera, tea art, and fabric art. It also provides free art lectures and opera film screenings. The 8th-floor corridor exhibition area has permanent exhibitions on glove puppetry and occasional special exhibitions. Groups of ten people or more can book guided tours. The rehearsal rooms and multi-functional briefing rooms are also available for rental by cultural and art groups. In addition, the theater has planned opera campus promotion performances, campus art education programs, and an affiliated youth Gaozi Opera group training and performance programs, aiming to systematically inherit traditional opera and cultivate young talent.
