“San-ge bang-kong” is the Taiwanese pronunciation of “three caves,” a name earned because the three railway tunnels (Yuan-shan Nos. 1, 2, and 3) are joined together. It has become a new cycling path in Houtong. The three bang-kong sit beside the Fukuzumi Tunnel, on the banks of the Keelung River; this stretch of water was once known as Zhuzi Pond. Just across the river is the famed Yuan-shan-tzu flood-diversion channel, and above its intake you can still make out the tiny, ancient Fu-an Temple to the Earth God. The spot is remote and feels desolate, adding a touch of melancholy. The tunnel mouths are built of stone walls mottled with moss and grime. The first two tunnels are short and bright—perfect for a leisurely stroll among the old brick-and-stone lining. Between the second and third is a small viewing platform with benches for a rest. The third tunnel is longer and curved, making the whole ride a cool, breezy delight.
