The thriving fishing and salt industries in Budai date back to the Qing dynasty. The picturesque scene of fishing boats and salt pans once brought a beautiful and prosperous era. In 1824, the Zhounan Salt Field was established, marking the beginning of Taiwan's "Golden Age of Salt". Over time, Taiwan's salt production shifted from domestic production to imports, and in 2002, the "Sun-Dried Salt" tradition in Taiwan came to an end. To revive the rich salt field culture in Budai, the Budaimizui Cultural Association envisions a "Happy Salt Village" and adopts an "Environmental Education/Event Industry" strategy for sustainable development. By integrating salt production, daily life, and ecology, the association aims to revitalize the Zhounan Salt Field, which had been abandoned for six years. The goal is to create a salt field that combines culture, tourism, and education, allowing visitors to experience the old soul and new charm of the salt field firsthand. The Zhounan Salt Field is a "Cultural Salt Field", while the nearby Xincuo Community (including Longjiang and Xincuoli) is a "Cultural Salt Village". These two areas can showcase the historical depth, local context, and daily life of Budai's salt industry from a cultural and everyday perspective. The "Xie Yan Festival" is an important annual celebration held at the Zhounan Salt Field. In the past, salt workers would prepare offerings to pray to the salt field on important holidays, thanking heaven and the gods for blessing the salt harvest. Since 2008, the Zhounan Salt Field has held the Xie Yan Festival at the end of each year to express gratitude to the land and combine traditional industry culture with modern cultural festivals.
