Xizhi at that time was also a major producer of Nanmu wood used in making incense. Taking advantage of the regional convenience, soon after they transformed their inn into an incense shop, which became the origin of the current Mingde Tang Incense Shop. In the early days of incense production, acquiring fragrant materials was not easy. The machine used to create incense powder was a large iron drum filled with countless small iron balls. After adding Chinese herbal ingredients, the balls would crush the herbs into powder by colliding within the drum. Every day, the incense master's first task was to check the weather. If the sun cooperated, half a day would suffice. A skilled master could produce as much as 100 catties (approx. 50 kg) of incense per day.
