Heritage meets modern style — Lao Hui Xiao Can Zhuo ("Come Over, Small Dining Table") on Wu Fong North Road specializes in freshly made classic Taiwan homestyle dishes. The restaurant's entrance features a colorful mural of Chiayi's iconic landmarks. While the married owners are not originally from Chiayi, they fell in love with this city nestled at the foot of Ali Mountain, choosing to migrate and settle here. The space embodies unique vintage Taiwanese elements, timelessly curating nostalgic memories of youth for mature guests and modern retro style for younger generations. Lao Hui's menu highlights homestyle set meals, with fresh ingredients procured daily from the marketplace. Signature sauces are almost entirely homemade—such as soy sauce, chili oil, and pickled vegetables and fruits. Popular dishes include Thai-style Lemon Fish, distinguished by its fresh fish and homemade Taiwanese-style Thai sauce; instantly disappearing Braised Beef Pot; and the signature Miso Braised Chicken made with plums they ferment annually. Though located inside a residential building, the restaurant's design boldly recreates the street-style ambience of old Taiwan. Since opening in 2020, the restaurant has attracted repeat young visitors who bring family for group meals. True to its original vision, Lao Hui has become a family restaurant connecting generations through classic Taiwanese flavors.
