Although nowadays store fronts and product prices are becoming increasingly tourist-oriented, occasionally passing by, the flavors of old shops still bring back memories. "Shuanglian Yuanzaitang" started as a street stall in 1951, and has always been the most well-known dessert shop on Minsheng West Road. The most popular red bean paste is simmered over low heat for 5 to 8 hours, resulting in distinct yet soft and tender beans. The sugar water and red bean paste blend into a thick and rich red bean soup, and adding glutinous rice balls with a subtle rice aroma creates a classic dessert that has remained popular among Taipei residents for more than half a century.
As a shaved ice dessert, it offers an entirely different flavor. The same traditional ingredients include red beans, taro paste, peanuts, cereal, glutinous rice balls, and white fungus, as well as summer-only ingredients such as pineapple and cocoa. It is always a generous and lively bowl, with the caramel aroma of the sugar syrup, the fresh fruit fragrance, and the sweet and preserved bean flavor complementing each other perfectly.
