Many braised pork rice shops only offer a few kinds of food: braised pork rice, braised bamboo shoots, braised eggs, fried tofu, a few seasonal stir-fried dishes, and a few hot soups such as pork soup and rib soup. Although unobtrusive, they offer the traditional delicious flavors most cherished in our memories.
This old shop at the corner of Shuanglian Street is no different, promoting its braised pork rice and chicken rice. The braised pork is not made with minced meat but with hand-cut meat cubes, with more fat than lean. Soy sauce is added with five-spice powder, pepper, and Indian curry powder, and the meat cubes are braised until all the gelatin is released, becoming tender, soft, and juicy, melting in the mouth. A bit of curry powder is sprinkled on top, adding more layers to the meat flavor. The chicken strands are made from salted chicken breast meat, yet they are sweet and salty, tender, and chewy.
