Li Chunseng Memorial Church

2024-04-11
台北市大同區貴德街44號
The famous merchant Li Chunsheng from Dadaoqian became wealthy by starting as an agent for foreign trading companies. He helped British merchants manage the production and sales of tea in northern Taiwan, with remarkable success, and was called the "Father of Taiwanese Tea." He was a pioneer in exporting Taiwanese tea to Europe and America. As a Christian and a well-known local merchant, he often mediated and resolved disputes between foreign businessmen and local residents, bringing matters to a satisfactory conclusion. He was also generous and enthusiastic about public welfare, enjoying great prestige among the people. In addition, when Liu Mingchuan promoted modernization, he made considerable contributions. The Li Chunsheng Memorial Church, built by his descendants, was built to commemorate this immortal merchant. This two-story building is located on Guide Street. In the late Qing Dynasty, this area was where foreigners lived, and it was a bustling district with many wealthy merchants and foreign trading companies. Because it is located by the Tamsui River, where flooding often occurs, the foundation of the buildings here is higher than usual. Although the exterior tiles of the building have been renovated, its front features are still well preserved, resembling a human face, with the entrance as the mouth and two bull's eye windows as the eyes. This architectural style is unique to Taipei City and is very distinctive.
