The bridge was built in August 1889 by the first Taiwan Governor-general, Liu Mingchuan. It connected Sanchongpu (now Sanxiong District) to the Taipei's Dadaocheng Wharf. The bridge was named "Danshui Bridge" in 1895. It was an important transfer port in the Daluochen and Dadaocheng area at that time. On February 27, 1947, the Tianma Tea House cigarette smuggling incident occurred. The protest march on the next day, February 28, began at the current Taipei Bridge.
