Datan Village is the largest village in Xingang Township, predominantly populated by the Lin family. According to legend, in the first half of the seventeenth century, a man surnamed Lin crossed the sea from Lunzi Society, Yongfeng Village, Nanjing County, bringing with him an image of the famous Jin-resistance general Yue Fei for protection. After arriving in Datan Village, he initially enshrined it in his home; as his descendants multiplied, they built a temple in the village to honor the deity. It became the only Yue Wang Temple in Chiayi County and the first Jingzhong Temple ever established in Taiwan, with the longest history.
To this day, every year on the fifteenth day of the second lunar month—the birthday of Yue Fei—Datan Village holds a grand ceremony, and many villagers flock to Jingzhong Temple to worship Lord Yue Wumu. Jingzhong Temple has become the enduring spiritual center of Datan Village.
