Tong'an Wharf is located in Jincheng Town. It was once the key harbor connecting Zhangzhou and Xiamen. Due to its strategic location, the area once thrived as a hub for commercial trade with incessant foot traffic. The site offers vast panoramic views of the sea. The expansive scenery outside the wharf resembles standing at the deck of a ship just setting sail. This harbor was once a place where travelers bid farewell, merchants made transactions, and families waited. It witnessed countless local stories and memories too. During World War II, Kinmen was occupied by the Japanese. In the later stages of the war, the Japanese forces stationed in Kinmen got cut off by Allied troops after suffering losses in the Pacific, and their supply lines were interrupted. As a result, the Japanese army compulsory conscripted about 500 mules and over 500 handlers from across the island. These individuals and mules were forcefully involved in the Japanese military operations in which many perished because of overwork or other reasons. To commemorate this history, the locals erected a "Monument Marking the Tragedy of Kinmen's Muleteers Conscripted by the Japanese Army", reminding future generations to remember the past. Tong'an Wharf is more than a transportation hub; it is also a crucial landmark representing Kinmen's history and wartime recollections.
