One of the most captivating attractions of Dongyin is undoubtedly its sunrise. Whether it's affectionate couples, spouses in loving marriage, or entire families, gathering together at the best vantage point—East Junghou Lighthouse—to greet the arrival of a beautiful new day must invoke feelings beyond words as the sun gradually rises. The East Junghou Lighthouse is located at the mountain slope of Shewei Mountain on Dongyin Island, standing 13 meters tall with a pure white body, circular blue dome, and situated next to steep cliffs. During the Qing Guangxu period (1875-1908), the Treaty of Shimonoseki designated Mawei as a commercial port. To guide passing ships, a British engineer designed and constructed this lighthouse, the only structure in the Matsu Archipelago exhibiting British architectural style. It was designated a national third-class historic site by the Council for Cultural Affairs in 1988, the northernmost heritage site in the Taiwan-Min River region. In early years, the lighthouse was situated within a restricted zone, and lighthouse keepers had to live inside the tower with their families. To supply food for staff, chicken coops and pigsties were established outside the tower. During resource-scarce times, people living nearby envied these keepers so much that they dubbed this place "Dongyin Villa." On the cliffs beneath the lighthouse, initially two fog cannons were installed; currently, one fog horn has been added and serves as the navigation aid instead. Facing the East China Sea, this 13-meter white tower rises majestically above steep rock faces, harmonizing with the deep blue waters below for a particularly enchanting scene. Visitors may follow the winding path with its low white concrete railing to reach this lighthouse.
