Even before entering the shop, you can already smell the fragrant aroma of zongzi. Glutinous rice is the essence of Jiuru Commercial House. Whether it is fried rice cake, Huzhou meat zongzi, or wine yeast rice balls, they are all authentic Zhejiang snacks. The zongzi here is a long-shaped Chaoshan zongzi, available in two varieties: sweet red bean paste zongzi and salty pork zongzi. The red bean paste filling is smooth and not too sweet, while the salty pork is just the right balance of fat and lean, with a yolk added, making it not greasy and very delicious. Because Chaoshan zongzi is boiled, the uncooked rice is put into boiling water until the rice grains become soft, giving it a chewy texture.
Another specialty of Jiuru Commercial House is the rice balls. It is known as the progenitor of Taiwanese sesame rice balls in Taiwan. There are two ways to eat it: boiling it in plain water or cooking it with wine yeast and eggs. Wine yeast is made from steamed glutinous rice that is fermented. After heating, the wine aroma is released, giving off a very fragrant smell. After eating, you will feel slightly drunk, and your body will also become warm. Eating a bowl of it in winter is very warm.
