Craftsman: Shih Chih-Hui *Master Shih Chih-Hui was born in Lukang in 1935. At the age of sixteen he began apprenticing with his father Shih Li—revered as the “Divine Blade”—learning the carving and gilding of Buddhist and Taoist images. After solid grounding in the fundamentals, he devoted himself to sculpture and the lacquer-and-gold craft; the span now exceeds seventy years. *The Quanzhou school of image finishing stresses armature work, composition, proportion, refined elegance, and a weighty, substantial manner, together with exquisitely ornate thread-like lacquer decoration; he has fused and elevated these traditions, and his skills are deemed matchless. *2014: Ministry of Culture—National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute “Craft Achievement Award”; Miaoli County Government “2014 Taiwan Woodcarving Heritage Award.” 2011: Council for Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan—“Living National Treasure.” 2009: Registered by Changhua County Government as preserver of the intangible cultural heritage tradition “Image Gilding (Zhuang-Fo).” 1994: Ministry of Education, 10th “National Heritage Award in Folk Arts.” *Shih Tzu-Ho Studio welcomes visitors to Lukang Tianhou Temple, Lukang Old Street, and local art centers.
