Guihou was originally a quiet, unspoiled fishing village in Wanli District, New Taipei City; most residents made their living from the sea. Fishermen unloaded their catch right beside the harbor and auctioned it off on the spot, gradually turning Guihou Fishing Port into a fish market. The buildings here are colorfully painted, and the seawater is a clear, brilliant blue. The market mainly sells fresh seafood, supplied and run by local Wanli boat owners—caught and sold by themselves, good quality and inexpensive, with an on-the-spot cooking service available.
Wanli Crab is Taiwan’s seafood marketing brand for crabs landed in Wanli, New Taipei City. This area accounts for over 80 % of Taiwan’s crab catch, so in August 2012 the New Taipei City Government launched the “Wanli Crab” brand. It covers three main crab species: flower crab (Charybdis feriatus), three-spot swimming crab (Portunus sanguinolentus) and stone crab (Charybdis natator and Charybdis granulata). Local fishermen have adopted the custom of tying the crabs with fluorescent-green triple-strand Terylene rope, giving Wanli Crab one of its signature looks.
Every autumn from September to November, the fishermen’s market near Guihou Fishing Port fills with crowds eager to buy the delicious Wanli Crabs. Today Guihou, made famous by these crabs, has become one of the busiest ports on the north coast. When you come, order the classic dish—steamed Wanli Crab. No seasoning is added; the full flavor of the sea is locked into the meat, a supreme taste you can enjoy with the simplest steaming!
