Located next to “Houtong Station,” the “Houtong Cat Village” is one of New Taipei City’s most famous tourist attractions and was once recommended by CNN as one of the world’s top six cat-watching destinations. Under the care of local residents, the cats here are clean and unafraid of people, making them perfect feline models in front of the camera. The village began when a cat-loving netizen rallied volunteers to improve the environment and create a friendlier living space for cats. Word spread online, and it gradually became a pilgrimage site for cat-loving tourists. To promote proper cat-feeding and conservation awareness, the village built a “Cat Public Office Preparatory Office.” Its exterior walls feature adorable cat murals designed by an illustrator, and both the façade and interior are equipped with catwalks and jumping platforms, allowing cats to roam and play freely. Outdoor sinks and flowing-water stations let visitors observe cats up close and learn their habits. The village also has a row of cat cafés serving coffee and light meals; sit down for a cup of coffee, and with luck you might catch an impromptu feline chase right in front of you.
