Simplified Chinese Dongji Island, also known as Dongji Island, is an island in the Penghu Archipelago of Taiwan and an important strategic point on the Taiwan‑Penghu shipping lane. Administratively, it belongs to Dongji Village, Wangan Township, Penghu County. The waters surrounding the island (excluding the island itself) belong to Taijiang National Park in Tainan City. As for the land area of the island, about 1.34 square kilometers had already been incorporated into the Penghu Hainan Xuanwu Basalt Natural Reserve in 2009. Dongji Island's strategic location has always been crucial; it has been a transshipment hub for Taiwan‑Penghu maritime trade since ancient times and once prospered. During the Japanese colonial period, to secure control over Taiwan and Penghu, the Japanese built military camps and a lighthouse on the island's northern and southern ends and stationed troops there to control the surrounding waters. Local residents herded sheep, and from a northern ridge one could view ancient red‑roofed, white‑washed houses set against green grass and black‑and‑white sheep, a pleasantly scenic view. Approximately 500 meters northwest of Dongji Island lies Cu Tou Island, an uninhabited island. About 4.5 kilometers to the west is Xiji Island, which was once inhabited and had a branch school, but it is now an uninhabited island. The island’s area is 1.5423 square kilometers at high tide and 1.9045 square kilometers at low tide.
