新北市石碇區石碇東街
Shihding East Street, also known as "Diao Jiao Lou" (lit. suspended feet building), is also Shihding Old Street, which is one of the few remaining "streets that don't see the sky" in Taiwan. Upon careful observation, you will notice that the houses here all rely on the power of pillars to suspend themselves above the riverbed, forming a unique architectural structure. In the past, in mountainous areas, people would sometimes have to suspend part of a building in the air in order to construct houses in ideal locations. The houses on the creek side of Shihding East Street are all supported by pillars, a feature that has been preserved since the Japanese colonial era, becoming a distinctive architectural style. The unique "Diao Jiao Lou" architectural form was developed by residents to solve the problem of limited land area. However, don't think that such a house structure is unreliable, because the "Diao Jiao Lou" buildings have stood here for decades, and time has proven that they are indeed very sturdy!
