In the old days, there were no riverbanks along the Tamsui River, and the street of Guede directly faced the river. After the goods from the mainland, which were transported across the sea, were unloaded, they were displayed and sold on Dihua Street, which is located behind Guede Street. Many businessmen on Dihua Street became wealthy and influential due to trade, and the houses they built were particularly beautiful. These houses had eaves to adapt to Taiwan's rainy weather, but the exterior walls had Western-style decorations, creating a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The greatest feature of these old shop houses was their extremely narrow and long depth, with the front used as a shop and the back used as a factory or warehouse, showing the characteristics of early clustered street houses. Dahao Street, within the district, is the most famous, with shops selling various dry goods, Chinese medicinal herbs, and woven products. It's also an important street for buying New Year's goods during the Chinese New Year. There are many other historically significant sites, such as the Taipei Xiahai City God Temple, Cisheng Temple, the Gu family residence, and the Xinfangchun Tea House, which all retain historical traces and are worth visiting. The Dadao Cheng Wharf within the district hosts a variety of delicious foods in its container market. Visitors can enjoy the food while taking in the beautiful scenery and sunset. Various activities and performances are also occasionally held there. Today, Dahao Street still preserves traditional architecture, red brick and tile houses, and retro streets, which contrast with the newly built structures around it, creating a picture of new and old intertwined. On weekends, visitors might as well take a stroll around Dahao Street, rent a set of traditional clothes, and immerse themselves in the historical atmosphere.
