Old Mei Green Grotto was voted by CNN as one of Taiwan's eight major secret landscapes. The vibrant green algae and azure sea complement each other, forming a dreamy green glow from February to May on the North Coast. It not only attracts photography enthusiasts to stop and capture the moment but also becomes a popular spot for Instagram influencers to take photos, newlyweds for outdoor wedding shoots, and a must-visit destination. Old Mei Green Grotto is located in Old Mei Village, Shimen District, New Taipei City. It was originally a volcanic reef rock left on the coast after the Datan volcano erupted. After long-term wave erosion, the loosely textured parts were eroded, leaving behind the harder parts to form longitudinal grooves. The northeast monsoon brings waves that hit the surface of the stone grooves, and the waves nourish the rock surface, slowly growing green algae such as stonewort and sea hair. The stone grooves are a natural landscape caused by the growth of sea algae. In recent years, due to the impact of global warming and human trampling, the green grotto faces a survival crisis. The stone grooves are very slippery and prone to slipping and falling. Please do not step on the stone grooves to avoid damaging the growth environment. It is recommended to appreciate from the beach as much as possible, so that the precious green stone grooves can survive sustainably.
