Mizhan Ancient Trail

2025-09-09
The Mizhan Ancient Trail, located beside the Mizhan Elementary School along Provincial Highway 193 at the 42 km mark, is a historic pathway with centuries of history waiting to welcome modern visitors. In the past, this trail served as the connection between Shuilian area near the East Coast and Shoufeng Township (crossing through the coastal mountain range). Local villagers carried rice to Mizhan Village on their shoulders, giving rise to the profession of "porters" and shaping the unique porter culture of the Mizhan trail. The original 7 km-long trail fell into disuse as road transportation advanced. Later, the Mizhan Community Development Association restored the ancient path by tracing ancestors' routes, using local materials to create bamboo-wood railings and water interception facilities. The trail, now renewed at an elevation of 415 meters above sea level and stretching 1700 meters, retains a natural, unspoiled charm. Although not long, the hike leaves hikers drenched in sweat and refreshed as if immersed in a forest bath. At the ridge line, the view of Mugua Creek winding through a longitudinal valley offers a breathtaking scene. Along the way, crisp bird calls create a soothing soundscape, helping one forget the aching legs.
