Established in 1996, the "Lee Tian-lok Hand Puppet Museum" was founded by the national treasure artist Lee Tian-lok during his lifetime to promote and pass on the traditional art of hand puppetry. Located in the Zhǐbǎi Shānzhuāng in Sanzhi District, the scenic views of the North Coast can be seen along the way, giving it an air of tranquility and seclusion. The three-story museum building, with its red bricks and wooden furnishings, fills the interior with a classic, rustic beauty. The entrance is a high-ceilinged gift area, with a puppet experience zone, trophy and medal display area, DIY puppet-making area, and provides paintbrushes for children to color hand puppets. The first floor of the museum enshrines the Hand Puppet Theater God Tian Yuanshuai, with a backstage instrument area on either side. Pushing open the old-fashioned large door at the back, a performance hall comes into view, with a classical and exquisite theater stage and rows of long benches, making one feel as if they have returned to the heyday of hand puppetry. As you move upstairs, you find the main exhibition area of the museum, showcasing over 70 years of Mr. Lee Tian-lok's precious collection, including traditional puppets over a century old, puppet heads, puppet clothes, and various props, backstage instruments, a special section for the puppet master Huang Yique from Quanzhou, China, and many foreign puppets, symbolizing Lee Tian-lok's contribution to Taiwan's traditional culture. The exhibition area features inductive audio guides, and the puppet clothing display racks can rotate 360 degrees for public viewing. The museum also occasionally schedules hand puppet performances. Visiting here, one can deeply feel Mr. Lee Tian-lok's persistence and contribution to traditional hand puppet culture, as well as the efforts made by his descendants to promote hand puppetry!
