On August 23, 1958, the world was shocked by the "August 23 Artillery Battle." At 6:30 p.m. that afternoon, the Chinese People's Liberation Army concentrated 342 various types of artillery pieces and launched a carpet bombing on the Kinmen area. In an instant, shells rained down and dust flew everywhere. Within two hours, over 57,500 shells were fired. Two years after the August 23 Artillery Battle, the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched smaller-scale "June 17" and "June 19" artillery battles. Afterwards, they gradually continued firing using the "single-day firing, double-day no firing" approach until the official declaration of the end of the artillery battle era in 1978. In total, the Chinese People's Liberation Army fired a total of 474,910 various types of shells, setting a world record for the highest density of shell impacts. The Que Shan hill located at the intersection of Huan Dao East Road and Huanghai Road was the area that suffered the most shell impacts at that time. In commemoration of this famous battle, a "August 23 Artillery Battle Victory Monument" was specially built in the center of the roundabout. The monument is carved from granite and has a high concrete base. It is a very prominent landmark in Kinmen. When passing through this roundabout, one can feel the monument's sacred and imposing presence.
