新北市瑞芳區猴硐柴寮路70號(猴硐車站)
Known for its adorable cat cafes, Houtong boasts rich coal-bearing geological formations, attracting many to extract black gold and becoming a former hub of Taiwan's coal mining industry. The past glory days have shaped its current cultural heritage. Houtong still preserves various mining relics such as mines, mine carts, coal bridges, miner dormitories, and the Rueisan Mining Company. Visitors can ride the mine carts through the coal tunnels to experience the miners' hardships, an unforgettable unique experience. Did you know that Houtong once had the latest coal production equipment? When you pass by Houtong by train, have you ever noticed the large characters "Coal Production Yu Guo/Rueisan Mining Company" on the black building walls? In the past, due to coal mining and geographical advantages, Houtong possessed the most advanced coal washing and production equipment at the time. After the opening of the Yilan railway line, it became a key base supporting Taiwan's industrial fuel. The coal plant with "Coal Production Yu Guo" on its exterior wall is the best testament to this. To explore Houtong's past glory and see the former grand coal plant, visit the coal bridge. From there, you can overlook the entire town and mining relics while also enjoying the beautiful geological scenery of the Keelung River. When night falls, the coal bridge spanning the valley, with its lights reflecting on the Keelung River, becomes a must-photograph night view of Houtong.
