A Must-Visit for History and Travel on Dongju When visiting Dongju, exploring old houses is an essential activity. In addition to the Fuzheng settlement below the lighthouse, the Dapu settlement near the Taiping Stone Carvings is also worth a visit. In the Fuzhou dialect, the term "Pu" refers to a small harbor. The Dapu settlement faces southward and was once the second-largest traditional fishing village in Dongju after Fuzheng. At its peak, it had over 50 households and 200 residents, with dozens of fishing boats of various sizes anchored in the harbor. It thrived for a time. The surrounding sea was rich in yellow croakers, silver croakers, and cuttlefish, naturally making it a good harbor. Additionally, the "DuiMian Mountain" (also known as LouZhai Ding) opposite the settlement effectively blocked the winter northerly winds. Thus, island residents often relied on traditional wisdom to adjust their fishing harbors according to seasonal wind patterns, resulting in the saying, "Summer Fuzheng, Winter Dapu." Since the lifting of the war zone in 1992 and a sudden decrease in fishing yields, the population gradually shifted out, and Dapu became a forbidden place overrun with weeds and devoid of human presence. The former glory of the fishing village became a memory. However, in the past decade, with collaboration between dedicated individuals and governmental community revitalization policies, new residents and artists established themselves there. They restored houses and walls, revitalized the old dwellings, and revived life. Gradually, more residents returned, opening homestays and attracting tourists, allowing Dapu to experience rebirth. The Expansive Views of Dapu's Dongyang Mountain Standing at the scenic cape within the Dapu settlement provides an expansive vista, offering the best viewpoint to admire the Linao Island. Following Dapu Road northward and turning east at the shooting range leads to the newly built Dongyang Mountain Trail. The Dongyang Mountain Trail and the Loubang Mountain Nature Trail in Beigan can be considered the two finest hiking paths in Matsu, both exuding grandeur and impressive vistas.
