Charcoal was once the main fuel used for cooking and heating. The Datan mountain area has abundant resources such as acacia wood, making it an ideal place for the charcoal industry, and it was also one of the first industries chosen by the early settlers for their livelihood. For example, Wu's charcoal kiln in Zhongzheng Mountain in Beitou has a history of more than 160 years.
After the restoration, the charcoal industry remained quite prosperous until the 1970s, due to the demand for fuel. However, with the rise of the gas industry, the charcoal industry gradually declined, and it is now almost nonexistent in the Beitou area. Although the charcoal industry is no longer part of the economic activities, it has transformed into a local cultural heritage. For example, within the "Ezaki Farm" of the Beitou Agricultural Cooperative, there is a charcoal kiln that has been restored after being out of use for 30 years. The kiln has an arched roof made of earth, with a double-sloping thatched roof on top. A single-sloping thatched roof shelter, called "Guzui Laozi," is placed above the combustion chamber to protect it from wind and rain. The owner of the Shiyiba Farm, who has a charcoal kiln, will demonstrate the charcoal burning process during tours, allowing the public to rediscover the traditional industry activities.
