After the 921 Earthquake, the Chelungpu Fault passed through Dakeng, and after the dramatic changes in the geological layers, many experts discovered the hot spring resources here, leading to the development of a new type of tourist attraction. The Dakeng Scenic Area boasts natural ecology, hot spring soaking, and convenient transportation, and has been selected as one of the top ten most popular tourist spots in Taichung. Visitors should not miss it! The Dakeng Scenic Area currently has 14 hiking trails, with a total length of approximately 17.7 kilometers, categorized by difficulty level. Nearby, there are hot springs formed by the 921 Earthquake, as well as the original Gonggong Elementary School and Dongshan Junior High School, which were rebuilt after the 921 Earthquake into the Dakeng Earthquake Memorial Park. The park preserves the Chelungpu Fault Zone relics and the leaning school buildings for educational use. The park is connected to Trail No. 9 below, making it a popular holiday destination due to its convenient parking and moderate difficulty. Trails 1 to 8 were opened in the early 1970s, built according to the natural terrain of Dakeng Mountain and its intersecting streams. The highest elevation is 859 meters, which is the highest point in Taichung City: Touwuxian Mountain. Trail No. 9 was opened in December 2005, Trail No. 10 was completed in March 2008, and Trail No. 9-1 was built in November 2013. These 14 hiking trails, each with varying difficulty levels, serve as a place for citizens to exercise and enjoy outdoor activities during holidays. Pavilions are set up between the trails, allowing visitors to climb high and enjoy the view, feeling relaxed and joyful. In terms of culture, Dakeng was once an important base for tobacco production in Taiwan. To this day, one or two historic tobacco barns have been preserved in the area, witnessing the past prosperity and development, letting people reminisce about this historical period.
