Dakeng Scenic Area ~ Hiking Trail Guide Dakeng Scenic Area is a vital retreat for the citizens of Taichung to soothe their souls, a favorite spot for hikers to stretch their legs, and one of central Taiwan’s most popular tourist destinations. On weekdays or holidays you’ll always see friends walking together and families enjoying the scenery, making it the shared backyard garden of every Taichung resident. Its most distinctive feature is the network of 14 hiking trails. Trails No. 1–8 were first opened in the early 1980s, following the natural terrain where Dakeng Mountain meets its streams; the highest point is Mt. Toukeng at 859 m above sea level. Trail No. 9 was added in December 2005, Trail No. 10 was completed in March 2008, and Trail No. 9-1 was finished in November 2013. Trail No. 9 Length: about 1.6 km—perfect for family hikes. Trailhead: from Jing-bu Rd., opposite the Jing-bu parking lot, walk straight to the 99 Bridge. Features: the path is shaded, quiet, and commands broad views over the Phase-11 urban-renewal district. Along the way you’ll find an ammunition depot left from the Japanese era and the Dali River; at the entrance is the 921 Earthquake Park. Trail No. 9-1 Length: about 0.6 km—also great for all ages.
