The traditional Taiwanese restaurant Jin Penglai, located on Tung Road in Shilin, started in Beidou in the 1960s. It is family-run, originally serving restaurant dishes that pair well with alcohol, so the flavors are heavy. The third generation, currently in charge, still uses the family's secret recipes, such as the signature dish, "Penglai Braised Pork Ribs." The ribs are selected from the abdominal muscles of Taiwanese pigs, and they are fried twice at different oil temperatures to retain moisture while making the outside crispy. The "Fotiaoqiang" uses more than ten ingredients simmered together, and with the addition of the "Penglai Braised Pork Ribs," it has a particularly rich flavor and texture, worth trying. Jin Penglai - A New Force in Taiwanese Cuisine Emerging from the Bar Culture Back in the days of Beidou's vibrant nightlife, many legendary dishes such as Fotiaoqiang and Braised Pork Ribs were created. These "restaurant dishes" that once circulated in the bars of Beidou in the 1930s have now become the signature dishes of Jin Penglai, still maintaining their quality without being affected by time and space. Sixty years ago, Chen Liangzhi established "Penglai Restaurant" and built a reputation in the bar culture of Beidou. Now, "Jin Penglai" is run by the third-generation descendants, still upholding the traditional Taiwanese cuisine with consistent flavor. The signature dish "Penglai Braised Pork Ribs" uses pork ribs with moderate fat, marinated with a special recipe for a full day, then directly fried for 15 minutes. The hot meat juice mixed with the fat texture is irresistible. The "Fotiaoqiang" inherited the skills of Fujian master chefs, combining ingredients like chestnuts, sea cucumbers, dried scallops, taro, and shark skin, then simmered with the broth of white-cut chicken, resulting in a rich and not greasy soup. Additionally, the "Fangshan Chicken" is cooked without any added flavor, and it can bring out the natural freshness of the chicken from Taitung. It has been praised as the best white-cut chicken in Taiwan. Therefore, Jin Penglai has not only become a well-known restaurant for connoisseurs in the country, but also a famous restaurant that is highly recommended by Japanese tourists visiting Taiwan.
