Simple and Rustic Min Dong Charm Witnessing the Village Migration
Visiting Fu Zheng Village, a must-see attraction in Dongju Island, presents a remarkable scene. The rustic landscape leaves a profound impression. Locals in Dongju once shared a proverb: "*Summer at Fu Zheng, winter at Da Pu*." This saying reflects the seasonal migrations of old. Since Da Pu village lies at the southern tip, it is better protected from the northwesterly winds in winter, whereas the southwesterly winds in summer make Fu Zheng Village, at the northern end of Dongju Island, a more comfortable habitation. As the saying goes, villagers in early times traveled seasonally between the two areas for fishing.
Fu Zheng Village used to be the most prosperous settlement in Dongju. As fish catches declined and residents gradually moved away, accompanied by fewer military garrisons, it fell into decline. Today, the village echoes with the presence of abandoned stone houses and the adjacent Dongju Island lighthouse, while the Fu Zheng White Horse Lord Temple stands silently as a guardian. The architecture of Fu Zheng showcases the traditional Min Dong style, with simple structures like two-sloped roof (Era Shui) and irregular stone masonry (Luan Shi Qi). Compared to Cinnick (Qin Bi), these buildings create a different atmosphere. Now, about ten households remain, preserving the village's calm and unpretentious charm.
In recent years, the government has actively promoted preservation efforts, gradually restoring activity to Fu Zheng from near abandonment, making it a precious cultural heritage. Although the sight of empty homes is poignant, the quiet grandeur exudes the unique humanistic atmosphere of Matsu's traditional settlements.
Eternal Aesthetic of Fu Zheng’s White Horse Lord Temple
Step into Fu Zheng village settlement, where simplicity and peace are omnipresent. Time has weathered the rooftops and brick walls, presenting a scene of history. Seen from afar, the White Horse Lord Temple stands out dramatically with its bright flame-shaped curved wall at the roof's peak. According to legend, the temple was built during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty. In 2000, due to structural deterioration, the temple underwent deconstruction and rebuilding. It venerates the principal deity White Horse Lord and his wife, alongside the accompanying deities Lin Shui Lady and Horse General, standing as eternal guardians of this village.
