Located at the southern tip of the Fenggui Peninsula in Penghu, the area was formerly known as “Fenggui Tail.” This place features Penghu’s distinctive columnar basalt joints, which are highly developed, and has long been eroded by waves, creating a narrow sea erosion gorge. The bottom of the gorge is eroded into a sea erosion cave, and at the top of the cave there is a small hole that follows the joint seams into the cave. Whenever the tide comes in each week, waves flow into the sea erosion cave through the gorge, and the air inside is violently compressed, often producing a “whoosh…whoosh” sound. This sound resembles the wind-driven furnace used by people in the past to kindle fire, which is why the Fenggui Cave is famously called “Fenggui Listening to the Waves.” It is the best spot in Penghu County for listening to the sound of the sea. Coupled with the unique basalt landscape, the view from the early morning or sunset is magnificent, evoking a poet’s beauty. Next to the Fenggui Cave is a charming pavilion with two floors shaped like shells. Visitors can walk up to enjoy the panoramic sea view and observe the spectacular basalt erosion landscape on the ground.
