新北市烏來區覽勝大橋與溫泉路口交會處
The Wulai Scenic Train in Wulai District, New Taipei City, was originally built just for hauling timber. As tourism at Wulai Falls grew, passenger service officially began in 1963, with staff pushing the cars by hand. To cope with rising visitor numbers, the line was motorized in 1974, using diesel engines. In 1987, despite many difficulties, a tunnel was blasted at the Falls Station to replace the original turntable, and this system is still in use today. After the logging industry disappeared, the train cars were repurposed to carry tourists. In 1963 they were converted into the charming little sightseeing cars seen today. Though not luxurious, don’t underestimate them—they’re quite speedy. The 1.6-kilometre run from the departure station to the Falls Station is over in a flash, and open side panels give passengers panoramic views of the lush forest. Beside the tracks runs the Lover’s Trail, built along the Nanshi River valley. A recommended itinerary is to ride the train uphill, then stroll back down the Luliao Bridge via the Lover’s Trail. With a cliff on one side and the river on the other, this easy walk lets visitors breathe fresh air and enjoy negative ions—a wonderfully relaxing way to experience the area.
