The Administration of Kinmen National Park, under the Ministry of the Interior, is currently closing the venues for the renovation work of the De Yue Lou and Huang Huihuang's mansion, as well as the Shanhou Xiqing Hall. It is expected to reopen by the end of September 2025. De Yue Lou was built in 1931, and it was designed and constructed by the master craftsman Chen Nan'an from the mainland of Fujian, after Huang Huihuang, a wealthy merchant of the Shuitou community, made his fortune. It is also the tallest building in the Shuitou community at that time, and was named "De Yue Lou" (meaning "the building that first gets the moon") based on the concept of "being close to water, one gets the moon first." At the time of the construction of De Yue Lou, it was the worst period for the security situation in Kinmen. There were frequent incidents of robbers landing and looting. As the Shuitou community is located by the sea, it was also a target for robbers to land and plunder. Therefore, De Yue Lou was specially designed with many defensive structures: there are gun holes on the walls of the third and fourth floors for aiming guns, the battlements on the roof are for defense, and there are escape tunnels that lead the owners to the adjacent Fanza Building in emergency situations. It is both functional and beautiful, and De Yue Lou was once selected as one of the Top 100 Historic Buildings in Taiwan. There is currently also a free tour that leads visitors into the historical charm of De Yue Lou. Guided Tour ◼ Daily fixed tours: 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00.
