The Beitou Zhongyi Temple in Lukang, which received its incense from Quanzhou in mainland China, was first enshrined in the 55th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, corresponding to 1790 CE. In its early years it followed the lu-zhu system of being rotated among private homes for worship; later, in the 3rd year of the Daoguang reign (1823 CE), a dedicated temple was built for its veneration. The temple’s exterior is resplendent; its side walls are inlaid with marble slabs carved with poems by renowned local Lukang calligraphers, painters, and literary poets. Inside, finely crafted wooden shrines and a plaque reading “Loyalty and Righteousness” can be found. The entire temple is decorated with many brilliant colors, making it exceptionally ornate.
