Dadaocheng Gu House

2017-12-06
台北市大同區歸綏街303巷9號
The Gu family salt store located at No. 9, Lane 303, Guui Street was built by Gu Xianrong, the father of former chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation Gu Zhengfu, in 1910. As the Gu family was engaged in the salt business at that time, this family mansion was always called "salt store." It faced the old Tamsui River dock, and was originally built by the river for commercial purposes, allowing boats to dock directly in front of the house. In 1961, the Gu family moved out of the mansion, and in 1963, the current site was set up as Rongxing Kindergarten, which continues to this day. This building is quite distinctive, in the style of late Western Renaissance architecture, with an arcade in front, a light yellow tile exterior, elegant arch windows, and glazed railings. The elaborate medals and relief decorations on the central gable of the front facade reflect the trend of Western influence spreading to the East during that era, and it represents the style of wealthy families at that time. Entering the house, the ceiling and staircase made of finely crafted cypress wood are well preserved, and there are also marks of the Da Wa Trading Company, which Gu Xianrong operated, on the walls. The Gu family salt store not only witnessed the prosperity of the Gu family, but also became a part of the history of Taipei.
