Jinshan Old Street, formed along the mountain town’s residential alleys, was once a bustling market hub and is now one of the most popular old-street tourist destinations. When speaking of Jinshan Jinbaoli Old Street, one cannot ignore the famed “Jinshan Duck Meat.” The shop opened in 1958 and, for more than fifty years, has dominated Jinbaoli; today the second generation—Li Guangxiong and his wife You Mei—runs it.
It began as a tiny noodle stand; after two or three years it switched to selling duck. At first only one duck was sold a day, but as customers increased, sales rose to a dozen or so. A decade ago the government developed the North Coast Scenic Area, jump-starting Jinshan’s tourism industry, and Jinshan Duck Meat’s business truly took off. Eventually, even with more than forty relatives and friends helping, they still couldn’t keep up. Visitors from afar, eager for the duck, began carrying their own plates and bowls to fetch the meat; in time, the spectacle of everyone wandering the old street clutching a plate of duck while hunting for a place to sit became a common sight, said to draw nearly half a million gourmets a year.
