Built during the Japanese colonial period around the 1910s, at that time anti-Japanese resistance forces rose continuously throughout Taiwan, so the Japanese rulers first built large-scale prisons in Taipei and Tainan. The layout of the Taipei Prison is radiating, which was a trend of prisons in various countries during the 19th century. It is surrounded by high walls, and the stones used were mostly taken from the Taipei Prefecture Wall demolished around the 1910s. They are mainly andesite and Qilianshan stone. These were materials transported from stone quarries near Dazhi and Neihu during the late Qing Dynasty, during the Guangxu era, to build the Taipei Prefecture Wall. At that time, the stones were first transported from the mountain to the banks of the Keelung River, then transported by boat along the Tamsui River to the Hegou Tou wharf. Today, it also has profound historical value.
