The Red House was completed in 1899 after four and a half years of construction. Over the decades, it passed through several owners. In the 1980s it faced demolition to make way for a high-rise, but the owner’s grandmother resisted the pressure and saved the building, though it remained abandoned for more than ten years. After the MRT line opened, Tamsui regained its vitality; with help from friends and cultural activists, the family began restoration in 1999 and reopened the site in January 2000 under the spirit of “revitalizing historic monuments.” Recommended dishes: pasta, set meals, afternoon tea.
