Tide-Dependent Scenic Spot: Matsu's Moses Parting the Sea Xiniu Yu, also known as Xiniu Island, is the most famous intertidal area in Dongju, composed of beaches, mudflats, gravel beaches, and rocky reefs. It is named after its shape resembling a rhinoceros. When the tide drops, the island connects with the mainland, creating a "land-connected island" landscape. Jiuguang, located near the mouth of Fujian's Min River, lies at the boundary of freshwater and seawater, fostering rich shellfish and seafood resources. The region is renowned for its abundance of "flower clams" (Hai Guazi), purple sea urchins, Buddha's hand, sea helmets, purple laver, turban snails, and octopuses, offering an incredibly diverse range of seafood with exceptionally fresh flavors. Locals recognize the area as "Mother Nature's fridge," drawing shellfish gatherers in large numbers during the lunar spring tides, ensuring bountiful harvests. The island is also home to rare Matsu coastal flora—the "marine buckthorn," which is used to brew medicinal liquor for treating ailments like rheumatism. Mostly composed of rocky formations, the island is one of Dongju's premier fishing spots, abundant in seasonal fish species such as black drum, blackback snapper, and grouper, making it a cherished destination for anglers. Experience the Moses Parting the Sea Phenomenon To witness the miraculous Moses Parting the Sea of Xiniu Yu directly, visitors must calculate the rising and falling tide times accurately (with the round-trip taking about one hour), wear anti-slip shoes, and frequently monitor tide changes. For safety, it is recommended to be accompanied by local guides familiar with the area.
