Wenchang Temple

2024-04-11
台北市大同區迪化街2段364巷14號
During the Qing Dynasty, the people of Dalongdong enshrined the Emperor of Literature in the Bao'an Temple. Under the plan of the juren (jinshi degree holder) Chen Weiyin, the "Shuren Academy" was established within the Bao'an Temple, widely spreading knowledge and greatly enhancing the cultural level of the local area. It is considered a pioneer in the cultural and educational development of Dalongdong, cultivating numerous talents. During the Japanese occupation period, the academy continued to take on the responsibility of education. During the annual festival, scholarships were awarded to students of the public school, encouraging the children to study. Later, the "Shuren Academy Wenchang Temple" was built at the current No. 2 section of Dihua Street in Taipei City. Now, whenever the exam season comes, examinees often place their admission tickets and offerings on the table, praying for success in the exams. The offerings are varied, each with its own meaning, such as oranges symbolizing great luck and prosperity, green onions symbolizing intelligence and cleverness, golden dates symbolizing success in the imperial examinations, radishes symbolizing good fortune, and osmanthus leaves symbolizing the support of benefactors, which is very interesting. The Wenchang Temple has witnessed the educational history of Dalongdong, and shares a common cultural and educational origin with the Dalongdong Public School. It is not only an important historical site in the area, but also a witness to the traditional educational values passed down by the ancestors.
