Taihe Pastery Shop

2020-10-30
Taihe Cake Shop was established in 1946, and it once sold preserved fruit and specialty products at the Taiping Market in Dadaocheng. After opening a branch in Manka in 1964, it gradually shifted its business to making pastries, cakes, and bread. It is now in the third generation, led by Mr. Chen Junjie. Located near Longshan Temple and Dong San Shui Market, Taihe Cake Shop mainly sells traditional pastries, such as various mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival, custom-made box cakes for traditional weddings. People who visit Longshan Temple on regular days often buy vegetarian pies, wife cakes, and scholar cakes here. Foreign tourists especially like to buy pineapple cakes as souvenirs. Sweet ingredients like mango, melon seeds, and red dates are popular items during the Spring Festival, used for ancestral worship and entertaining guests at home. Mr. Chen Junjie, the current owner, said, "I want to preserve the traditional taste I remember." Originally wanting to open a flower shop, Mr. Chen returned to the store due to his parents' request, relearning how to make pastries and baking, and taking further education courses to understand various ingredients and new techniques. Although the bakers at Taihe Cake Shop had started learning to make bread in the 1960s, making all kinds of baked goods such as pastries, cakes, bread, and sweet ingredients, Mr. Chen positioned Taihe Cake Shop as a traditional pastry shop. In addition to adjusting ingredients to meet modern people's demands for food safety and health, he insists on focusing on the expertise and flavor of wedding cakes, sweet ingredients, and pastries. Although it is a traditional cake shop, it actively participates in various marketing activities. For example, in 2010, in response to the opening of the Bopiliao Historic Street Area, Taihe Cake Shop collaborated with Quyou Wan to launch a "Baked Cheese Cake." The outer box features an illustration of a Manka map, while the side provides an introduction to Taihe and its origins. This allows people who receive the gift box to experience the local culture even if they have never been to Manka. The creative packaging combined with the delicious baked cheese cake made Taihe Cake Shop quickly become a famous shop in Taipei for good gifts.
