In 1954, General Liu Yuzhang took over as the commander of the Kinmen Defense Command. During his tenure, he commanded the September 3rd Artillery Battle, and led the troops to dig trenches, carve tunnels, and build the hiking path on Mount Wu. The undergrounded Kinmen greatly contributed to the later August 23rd Artillery Battle. President Chiang Kai-shek, remembering his glorious achievements, named the Wu Mountain Road as Yuzhang Road, and erected a bronze statue of Liu Yuzhang on the mountain slope as a memorial.
