In the 1950s, Taiwan and the United States signed a mutual defense treaty, which led to the expansion of the original Gongguan Airport. The airport was renamed "Ching Chuan Kuang" Airport, or "Qingquan Gang" Airport, in honor of General Qiu Qingquan, a hero of the anti-Japanese war. At the time, it was the largest air force base in the Far East. When the Vietnam War broke out in 1962, the US military needed a base to support its operations against North Vietnam. The C-130 Hercules transport aircraft was stationed in Taiwan, and Qingquan Gang Airport was used as a logistics base. In 1966, seven oil storage tanks were built near the base in Yangcuo Village, Qingshui District, to provide fuel for US fighter jets and B-52 bombers. As the Vietnam War came to an end and Taiwan-US relations deteriorated, the military base gradually lost its importance. Today, the Daxiang Oil Depot is the only remaining historical building, a testament to the cultural context of the US-Vietnam War. The oil depot stands like a giant on the Taizhuang Platform of Dadu Mountain. The seven large oil storage tanks cover an area of approximately 16 hectares. Each tank is surrounded by a 78-meter-long and 1.5-meter-high dike. The tank itself has a diameter of about 28.4 meters and a height of about 16 meters, with 66 external stairs and a steel plate thickness of 0.9-1.5 cm. In 2000, the military contracted with a private company to dismantle the oil tanks as scrap metal. However, thanks to the efforts of local communities and government agencies, the last oil tank was rescued from the contractor and preserved as a historical asset. The oil was transported from an American oil tanker anchored in the Gaomei sea area, through an underground pipeline along the Dajia Stream to a pressurized station in Gaobeili, and then on to the seven oil tanks in Yangcuo Village. In 2014, the Daxiang Oil Depot Rest Park was completed on the north side of Daxiang Elementary School. The oil depot is the most unique feature of the park. The oil depot is not normally open for internal visits, but the surrounding area has a firewall, gates, and trees for separation. From April 1, 2022, the site is open for free visits on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm. During the opening hours, please contact Mr. Wenjun Zeng from the Yangcuo Community Development Association at 0921-787803 for assistance.
